In April 2011 the Government directed the Ministry of Justice to undertake a review of the Family Court. The Family Court deals with families and children at highly stressful and sometimes risky times in their lives. It is vital it operates effectively so all involved can safely and securely move on with their lives. The review’s aim is to ensure that the Court is sustainable, efficient, cost-effective, and responsive to those people who need access to its services – particularly children and vulnerable people. It will also ensure that the processes of the Family Court are straightforward and its decisions are fair, timely, and durable.

“The Government’s vision for children is that every child thrives, belong, and achieves. Most NZ children live this vision with the support of their parents, and family and whanau. About 15% of NZ children are at risk of not doing well. The Government is concerned about these children and they are the focus of the green paper.”A ‘Green Paper’ is a discussion document that outlines ideas a government wants to test with the public before making decisions. The Green Paper outlines a number of ideas on how to improve leadership for vulnerable children, some policy changes and some changes to how services are delivered. This is an opportunity for members to contribute their views on how to best meet the needs of vulnerable children. ANZASW will be making a submission that reflects the views of the membership while recognising that the membership is made up of a number of distinct stakeholder groups. Branches, Roopu and Interest Groups and workplace groups are all encouraged to discuss the Green Paper in preparation to contributing to the ANZASW submission. Contributing to the ANZASW submission does not prevent members making individual submissions. For more information visit http://www.childrensactionplan.govt.nz/
